One of the most grueling, and hardest decisions, is restarting from scratch. No one wants to hear it, and as an SEO specialist, I certainly don’t want to be the person telling a client this either! But, sometimes, it has to be done. At some point, having thousands of low quality links cannot be fixed. We’ve seen websites that have ten’s of thousands of low quality links, literally disappear, after Algorithm updates. Here are some commonly seen scenarios, we see, of websites suffering from penalties.
1. Low Overall Link Volume but high % of low quality links – This is one of the most commonly seen. We see websites with a few hundred links, but of those few hundred, many are low quality. These low quality links are enough, over all percentage wise, to sink the website.
Solution: In this scenario, we always recommend a mixture of disavowment, link removal, and link dilution. Work on link dilution, and in 6-12 months, you’ll see your rankings come back. This has been our experience in the past.
2. High Link Volume and high % of low quality links – This is the most trickiest and hard scenario. If you’re a brand, like KIA, VW, or some other noteworthy company, you have no chance. You have to go through the phases, and do disavowment, and link removal. In addition, do some link dilution, if possible, by building targeted high PR links, but your primary attention needs to be on link removal. The most successful case studies involve link disavowment + link removal, with a focus on link removal. If you’re a small business owner, being told you have 10’s or 100’s of thousands, of links, might be the worst thing to hear.
If you’re a small business owner, and hear this, you may have to face the proposition of restarting. It’s financially difficult for a small business owner to pay for link removal. Without link removal, you’ll have a difficult time getting high rankings.
